Luigi Carpaneda twice won an Olympic medal with the Italian foil fencing team. In 1956, his contribution to the Italian gold was five wins and five losses. A year earlier, Carpaneda had also been on the World Champion team, and he had won a team bronze in 1957. He later switched to sailing, and again became a World Champion, winning the title in the 3/4 ton class in 1982 at Trieste. He was also a five-time captain of the Italian team at the Admiral Cup, was Commodore to the Yacht Club Porto Rotondo, and became an official adviser to the FIS. Carpaneda was killed when he was hit by a car while he was crossing a street near his home in Milano.
