Biography

During his brief career, Norwegian biathlete Sivert Bakken won a mass start World Cup race, multiple medals at the European Championships, and two golds at the Youth Olympics. In 2016 Bakken was selected to represent Norway at the Winter Youth Olympics in his hometown of Lillehammer. At the Games he won a team gold in the mixed youth relay, and individual gold in the pursuit, along with silver in the sprint event. Two years later he competed at the Junior World Championships in Otepää, Estonia, where he won silver in the 4 × 7.5 km relay. The following year the championships were held in Osrblie, Slovakia, with Bakken winning bronze in both the 10 km sprint and the 12.5 km pursuit.

Bakken made his World Cup début in the 2020–21 season, placing 70th overall. The following season he had his best results when he won the 15 km mass start event in Oslo in March 2022 after previously finishing third in the same race a week earlier in Otepää. He won his first gold at European Championships in 2021 with victory in the mixed relay in Duszniki-Zdrój, Poland. Four years later he then won gold in both the 10 km sprint at the 4 × 7.5 km relay at the championships in Val Martello, Italy.

In December 2025 Bakken travelled to Italy to stay in Ville di Fiemme to train ahead of the next World Cup events. Tragically, however, he was found dead in his hotel room by one of his teammates. He was only 27-years-old.
