After going up to Magdalen College, Oxford, he was cox in the four consecutive Boat Races between 1907-10, winning two and losing two. At the 1908 London Olympics, Donkin was a reserve to the Leander crew that won the eights gold medal, with fellow Oxford man Gilchrist Maclagan getting the cox’s seat.
