A member of the Cestus Boxing Club, Ted Doland won the Queensbury Championship middleweight title in 1885 by beating W. H. Heath of Andover, who retired at the end of the first round. Doland went on to also win the prestigious German Gymnastic Society heavyweight title in 1886 by beating George Ruskell of the West End School of Arms. An assistant silversmith by trade, Doland took up refereeing after ending his boxing career. He was an ABA referee and judge, and regularly officiated at the annual championships, as well as those of Wales and Scotland.
