Karl Setterberg was the son of a schoolmaster and began his military career in 1898 as a second lieutenant in the Jämtland Rifle Corps. From 1902-03, as a lieutenant, he attended a military instruction course at the Central Institute for Gymnastics and from 1906-08 the military academy. In the following years, he served in various departments of the general staff, interrupted by two years at the state railway (1911-13) and less than one year at the Norrbotten border guard (1915). In the meantime, he was promoted to captain (1914).
Setterberg then led ski and winter training courses for officers and was seconded to the French army in the year 1921 before being transferred to the Skaraborg Regiment as a major in 1923. After his military career, he worked for the Försäkringsbolaget Allmänna Brand (General Fire Insurance Company) in Stockholm.
Setterberg was entered in the individual foil at the 1912 Olympic Games, but his main sporting activities were in skiing. Setterberg was active in the Association for the Promotion of Skiing, the Swedish Ski Association and various regional sports organisations in the Swedish province of Jämtland.
In 1906, he married Eva Maria Häggmark and had a son and a daughter.
