Ralph Sutton was a member of the Sword Club and the London Fencing Club, where he was taught by Professor Jean-Baptise Mimiague. Sutton first reached the final pool of the Amateur Foil Championship in 1913 and, after finishing joint third in 1920, captured the first of two successive titles in 1921, when he was undefeated in the final pool. He did not defend his title in 1923, but was selected for the team foil event at the 1924 Olympics. Sutton, however, never made the trip to Paris.
Sutton was educated at Shrewsbury School and then Oriel College, Oxford. Like his father, he was a barrister and was called to the Bar in 1905. He became a QC (Queen’s Counsel), and was awarded the OBE. Sutton had practices in London and on the Chester and North Wales circuit. Between 1941-53 he was editor of the Official Law Reports.
