Biography

Brian Pickworth’s original sport of choice was rugby, but he was forced to give that up after losing his left arm above the elbow in a shooting accident at the age of 21. Undeterred, he switched sports to fencing and had a lengthy international career that spanned almost a decade and a half. Proficient in all three disciplines, he first represented his country abroad at a major tournament at the 1958 British Empire and Commonwealth Games. His next stop was the 1960 Rome Olympics, where he was eliminated in the first rounds of the individual foil and sabre events, and round two of the épée. He went on to compete at three more editions of the Commonwealth Games – 1962, 1966, and 1970 – earning bronze in the team sabre, alongside non-Olympians Bob Binning and Michael Henderson, in 1962.
