The son of an engineer, Eric Mount-Haes was just 8-years-of-age when his father died. He joined the Royal Navy in 1917 and enjoyed a long and successful career in the Service, reaching the rank of lieutenant-commander. During his time in the Navy, Mount-Haes put his fencing skills to good use and was an inter-services foil and épée champion, and also a civil service foil champion. In winning the inter services foil title in 1936, it was the first win for the Royal Navy in the event for ten years. A former Scottish international, he won the Scottish sabre title in 1938.
After retiring from the Navy, Mount-Haes became an Inspector for Education and Science for Leicestershire, and helped promote fencing within the county’s schools. Mount-Haes was also a qualified fencing judge and officiated in nine sabre and foil events at the 1936 Berlin Olympics.
