The son of a plumber and glazier, Northamptonshire-born Charles Welch trained as a carpenter and later became a builder. He was also a volunteer with the Bournemouth Fire Brigade and when he left the brigade in 1913 was their second officer, having been promoted the previous year. Welch then emigrated to the United States with his wife Edith and family, and settled in the Wisconsin area, where he carried on his trade as a carpenter. He died in his adopted homeland in 1934.
