Alaa El-Sayed was a former captain of the Egyptian national handball team before becoming their coach. In 2004 El-Sayed led the team at the Athina Olympics, with Egypt placing 12th after losing all their group stage matches. He also held several administrative positions, including the head of the national teams committee of the Egyptian Handball Federation, and was a member of the technical committee of the International Handball Federation.
