David Edward was a half-back with the highly successful Paisley Amateurs that dominated the Scottish Water Polo Championship in the 1920s. Edward was a Scotland international prior to World War I and in 1920 he took part in the Olympic trial at Southport but did not make the final selection. Four years later he was a reserve to the British squad in Paris.
Edward also went to the 1928 Amsterdam Games after the British Olympic Association Management committee invited him to attend and observe the methods and tactics used by foreign water polo teams, and report back to them. In 1930 Edward was appointed as convener on the Olympic Training Scheme committee. At the London British Empire Games in 1934, he was the Scotland swimming team manager.
