Biography

Percy Daniell was the son of a master baker who followed in his father’s footsteps and ran a successful bakery business in Bristol. As well as being a leading baker, Daniell was one of the area’s top sportsmen, winning trophies for swimming, water polo, cycling, motor cycling, billiards, and skittles. He was also a vice-chairman of Bristol City Football Club.

Daniell was more committed to aquatic sports and as a player he became captain of the Bristol Water Polo team, and also won Gloucestershire county honours. He went on to become president of the Bristol Swimming Club, the Gloucestershire ASA, and the Western Counties ASA. Daniell regularly acted as timekeeper at many swimming events, and was also a leading water polo referee in the south-west of England. He acted as a goal judge in the France – USA round one game at the 1924 Paris Olympics. Daniell was also the timekeeper at the Knowle Greyhound Stadium in Bristol, and was a timekeeper and handicapper for the Somerset County Amateur Athletic Association.
