Biography
Albert Styer was an official of the Brighton Swimming Club for over 60 years, having been appointed to the water polo sub-committee as an 18-year-old in 1894. In 1953, despite his call for the club to appoint a younger president, the members ignored his plea and he was re-elected for a 19th year.
Styer was the Brighton water polo captain for 27 years and Sussex county captain for 14 years. An England international, he had the honour of captaining his country against Wales in 1904. Styer continued playing until the age of 43 and then became a referee, officiating in English national championship, inter-county, and international matches. At the 1928 Amsterdam Olympics, Styer officiated on one game, as linesman in France’s 16-0 trouncing of Malta in the quarter-final.
Styer followed his father Leonard’s profession, and became a dental surgeon. His father was also a former president of Brighton Swimming Club.
