Gus Taylor was a former Welsh international water polo player and referee. Additionally, he was a fine rugby player and was a member of the Cardiff second XV.
Taylor began swimming with the Cardiff YMCA in 1906 before joining Penarth SC 1909. He went on to captain the Penarth water polo team before and after World War I. By the time he retired from playing in 1932 Taylor had won Glamorgan county honours and represented Wales in the 1921 and 1922 seasons.
As a water polo official, Taylor was a member of both the Glamorgan county and Welsh international selection committees. He was president, and later a life member, of the Penarth club. Taylor was the Welsh team manager in 1934 and in 1938 was elected president of the Welsh ASA. At the 1948 London Olympics he officiated as a goal judge in eight matches, including the final pool game between Italy and Belgium. Taylor also acted as timekeeper in four other matches.
During World War I Taylor served as a sergeant in the Royal Field Artillery and was decorated with the Military Medal (MM) for bravery. After the War he worked in the accounts department of the Great Western Railway (GWR).
