Biography

H. R. Walker took up water polo refereeing in the 1930s and in 1946 had the honour of refereeing the final of the English Club Championship at Hull, when Avondale London beat Bradford Dolphins 8-5. Two years later at the London Olympics, Walker officiated in the match between Italy and Australia.

Walker held a variety of official posts at local, national and international level. He was secretary of the Birmingham and District Water Polo League, and honorary secretary, and later president, of the Warwickshire ASA. He was also president of the Midland Division of the Water Polo Referees Association, and was one of five men appointed to the ASA Water Polo Referees Panel in the 1950s, when he was also invited onto the International referees panel. Walker also found time to occasionally commentate on water polo for BBC radio.
