A contemporary of Harold Abrahams, Liverpool-born long jumper William Childs won many Northern Counties titles between 1920-37. He made his England international début against France in 1922 and the following year was second to Abrahams in the AAA long jump. Childs was one of four Britons selected for the long jump at the 1924 Paris Olympics but, like Abrahams and Guy Brockington, was a non-starter. Despite finishing fourth at the 1925 AAAs, Childs was the highest placed British jumper. He won his second AAA medal in 1932 when he was runner-up to Arthur Gray in the triple jump.
Childs joined the Liverpool City Police Force in 1927, and at Police Athletic Association Championships won long jump, high jump, and javelin titles. He was still competing in police competitions at the age of 41. Childs was awarded a Royal Life Saving medal in 1927.
Personal Best: LJ – 6.99 (1925).
