Jørgen Dornonville de la Cour attended secondary school in Hobro in North Jutland. In 1898, he failed to be admitted to the officers’ school and instead joined the Army as an infantryman in Aarhus. In 1899, he was appointed second lieutenant, stationed in Aalborg and eventually entered the officers’ school. After graduating in 1901, Dornonville de la Cour was assigned to the 3rd Dragoon Regiment in Aarhus. Later that year he was promoted to first lieutenant. Although he was officially seconded to the 8th Regiment for some months, he still served in the 3rd Dragoon Regiment. In 1916, he rose to the rank of cavalry captain and later became instructor in riding and cavalry drill at the officers’ school. In 1920, Dornonville de la Cour was appointed Knight of the Dannebrog. He was eventually transferred to the reserve at the disposal of the training department.
Jørgen Dornonville de la Cour was probably never married and had no children. He was entered for the Danish team in show jumping and dressage at the 1912 Olympic Games but did not compete.
