Adolf attended the military school from 1881-82 and became a second lieutenant in the Crown Prince’s Hussar Regiment. In 1890, he was promoted to lieutenant and served at the First Military District headquarters in Helsingborg until 1892. Adelswärd first worked as an instructor at the Strömsholm riding school from 1892-96 and then as a teacher at the military school until 1899.

In 1902, Adelswärd rose to the rank of captain and was seconded as military attaché in London and Paris (1903-05). He became a major in the Scanian Hussar Regiment in 1907 and a lieutenant colonel in 1911. Three years later, he was transferred to the Norrland Dragoon Regiment as colonel and commander.
