Biography

A former chief petty officer in the Royal Navy, Francis Morton was one of the best rifle and pistol shots produced by the Navy. Morton was posted to some notable ships, including HMS Pembroke, on whom he was serving at the time of him winning the coveted Grand Aggregate at Bisley in 1919. Two years later Morton won the Silver Cross as runner-up in the “Grand”.

A reserve for the 1919 Kolapore Match, Morton was in the Great Britain team in 1920 and 1921. He represented England in the National Match against Ireland, Scotland, and Wales four times between 1920-24. Also in 1920, he toured Australia and South Africa with Great Britain. Before World War I Morton, who was an accomplished track and field athlete, joined the Canadian Navy as a volunteer.
