Bill McCreavie took up gymnastics at the age of 17 and joined the Woodhouse School of Physical Culture in his hometown of Leeds. A carpenter and joiner by trade, he made his England début against Wales in 1939. McCreavie served as a bomb disposal sergeant during World War II and after the end of the hostilities he won the 1947 Yorkshire gymnastics title. He was selected for the London Olympics but was sadly forced out of the competition after injuring a hand in training. McCreavie later became a British Amateur Gymnastics Association coach.
