Biography

Hailing from Swansea, one of the early highlights of Mrs. Audrey Bates’ gymnastics judging career was in officiating at the 1953 women’s British Floor Exercises Team Championships won by the Swansea YMCA. Bates had the honour of judging the floor exercise and balanced beam at the 1960 Rome Olympics, and the following year was one of the judges at the European Women’s Championships at Leipzig. The annual Audrey Bates Gymnastics Tournament at the National Sports Centre, Cardiff, was named in her honour.
