Cliff Sander took up football as a student at Ipswich Technical College and joined the St. Helens Football Club of Ipswich at the age of 17. He remained with them for a decade, during which time he also represented Australia internationally from 1950, most notably at the 1956 Melbourne Olympics. At the Games, Australia defeated Japan in round one, before being bested by India in the quarter-finals. In 1958, he joined Brisbane Azzurri (now Brisbane City FC) and remained with them until his 1964 retirement. He was inducted into the inaugural class of the Football Australia Hall of Fame in 1999.
