Otto Büren was one of the sons of the big farmer and industrialist Gustav Büren (1855-1933). Gustav founded the local sauerkraut factory, which earned him the nickname “Kappes-König” (Cabbage King). His sons later took over the factory. Otto Büren and his brother Gustav Jr. were sports enthusiasts and were among the founders of the Hildener Fußball-Club 1903 (now VfB 03 Hilden). As a student at Bonn University, Otto became a successful wrestler, winning the heavyweight silver at the 1910 World Championships behind his compatriot, non-Olympian Gustav Sperling, and ahead of multiple Olympic medallist S. M. Jensen. Büren was killed as a reserve lieutenant at the age of just 33 by machine-gun fire during the Spartacist uprising in Berlin.
