Biography

Right-winger Ernst Melchior was a member of the Austrian football team at the 1948 London Olympics. They lost their first-round match 3-0 to the eventual gold medallists Sweden. In total, he won 36 international caps and scored 16 goals.

Domestically, Melchior played with Víllacher SV (1940-46) and FK Austria Wien (Vienna) (1946-54), and then moved to France to FC Rouen (1954-58) and FC Nantes (1958-59). He helped Austria Wien win the Austrian Championship in 1949, 1950 and 1953 and the Austrian Cup in 1948 and 1949.

Melchior turned to coaching after his active career and worked with Beşiktaş Istanbul in Turkey (1963-64), Fortuna 95 Düsseldorf in Germany (1967), Club Africain Tunis in Tunisia (1968-69), Jeunesse Esch in Luxembourg (1968-72), the Luxembourg national team (1969-72), and finally FC Rouen (1972-75). During his active sports career, Melchior also played handball, ice hockey and was a successful long jumper. He died at the age of 58 in 1978 at Rouen, after a long illness.
