Edinho was born in Rio de Janeiro, and as a youth joined Fluminense. An attacking forward, he played 358 matches with them between 1973 and 1982, coming back for the 1988-89 season. He competed at the 1982 World Cup, and then went to Italy to play for Udinese, where he played 138 matches, scoring 22 goals, helping them win five Serie A championships. Edinho also played at the 1986 World Cup, and in 1987 returned to Brazil, playing through 1990, first with Flamengo, then back with Fluminense, and ending his career in 1989/90 with Grêmio. Edinho also won a gold medal at the 1975 Pan American Games.
Edinho then became a prominent football manager, leading multiple clubs in a career that lasted through 2011, including Fluminense, Flamengo, Botafogo and Goiás and he was also on the bench of the Portuguese club Marítimo.
