Petar Zhekov was one of best forwards in the history of football in Bulgaria. During his career Zhekov played in 333 league matches scoring 253 goals. Zhekov began his career with one season at Dimitrovgrad in 1962–63, playing 25 matches and scoring eight goals. He spent the rest of his career playing for two clubs; Beroe and CSKA Sofia. For Beroe he played for the club for five seasons in 141 matches, scoring 101 goals. In 1968 Zhekov then moved to CSKA Sofia, playing in 167 matches, scoring a further 144 goals. Zhekov was the top goal scorer in the Bulgarian First League on six occasions from 1967 to 1973. For the 1968–69 season he won the European Golden Shoe for scoring the most goals in a top-flight European football league.
Zhekov played in 44 matches for the Bulgarian national football team from 1964 to 1973 where he scored 25 goals. During this time, he played in two FIFA World Cups (1966 and 1970), and won a silver medal in the football tournament at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics.
