Igor Solopov was regarded as one of the best Estonian table tennis players of all time, winning multiple national and international titles. Solopov began his career by winning three consecutive team golds at the European Youth Championships from 1976 to 1978. He made his first appearance at the World Championships in 1979, finishing seventh in the team competition. From 1981 to 1996 he won 19 medals, including 12 gold, at the Estonian Championships, representing the national team more than 50 times. In 1992 Solopov competed in the singles event at the Barcelona Olympics, but had a disappointing Games after being eliminated in the preliminary round. In the mid-1990s he moved to Sweden, where he lived for the rest of his life.
