Biography

Liu Songsheng won the championship of Group A with the team of the South China Athletic Association in the 1939-40 season. Subsequently, he played for Sing Tao but also for Kitchee SC and was regarded as the best Chinese right halfback. Liu’s disadvantages, however, were his lack of speed and aggressiveness. During the occupation of Hong Kong in World War II, he returned to his hometown Macau and joined the Police team. Regarded as one of the best four members, he played 40 of the 42 games of the Chinese team during their Olympic expedition in 1948. In the same year, Liu Songsheng represented Hong Kong in the final of the Hong Kong–Shanghai Inter Club Championship beating Shanghai 5:1. This was the last time that the event was held for almost 40 years. In 1949 he played against South Korea with a “Combined Chinese Team”, mainly consisting of players from Hong Kong. Liu continued to play at least until 1953.
