Emmanuel Kundé

Cameroonian football defender Emmanuel Kundé had a lengthy career both domestically and internationally, playing in more than 100 matches for his country. Kundé began playing for local clubs in the early 1970s before joining Canon Yaoundé in 1977. He spent the next 10 years at the club, winning several domestic titles, in addition to reaching the final of the 1984 African Cup Winners’ Cup tournament. After a stint in France playing for Laval and Reims in the late 1980s, Kundé returned to Cameroon, finishing his career with Olympic Mvolyé in 1992.

From 1979 to 1992 Kundé earned 102 caps for the Cameroon national football team, scoring 17 goals. In 1984 he was part of the squad that competed in the football tournament at the Los Angeles Olympics, with him playing in the group matches against Iraq and Canada. That same year Cameroon won their first African Cup of Nations title, beating Nigeria 3–1 in the final. Two years later the team finished as runners-up to Egypt in the 1986 final, before Kundé scored the winning goal from the penalty spot in the 1988 final, with another win against Nigeria.

Kundé also represented Cameroon at the FIFA World Cups in 1982 and 1990. At the latter, Cameroon played against England in the quarter-finals of the tournament. After England took the lead in the match, Kundé equalised for Cameroon, scoring a penalty in the 61st minute. England, however, went on to win 3–2 after extra time.

Following his retirement as a player Kundé worked as a coach for several Cameroonian clubs, including his old team Canon Yaoundé. He also held several technical roles with the national team.
