Denmark’s Per Røntved was one of the best football defenders of his era. Røntved made his senior début when he was 18 for Brønshøj BK in 1967. Initially playing as a midfielder, he moved back to a defender, making 116 appearances for the club where he scored 48 goals. In 1972 Røntved moved to West Germany to play for Werder Bremen in the Bundesliga where he made almost 200 appearances for the team. In 1979 he moved back to Denmark to play more than 100 matches with Randers Freja before making his final club appearances with Hvidovre IF in 1983.
Røntved played his first match for the Danish national team in 1970. Two years later he captained the team at the 1972 München Olympics where he played in six matches and scored a goal against Brazil. In August 1981 Røntved became the most capped player for Denmark when he played in his 63rd match. Just over a year later he earned his 75th and final international cap, a national record that lasted until 1985. During his international career Røntved captained the Danish team in 38 matches. Røntved was named the Danish Football Player of the Year in 1972 and was inducted into the Danish Football Hall of Fame in 2011.
