Desiet Kidane had her breakout year in 2018, when she won the road race and the time trial at that year’s African Championships. She also represented Eritrea at the Youth Olympics, where she was 15th in the combined team event. She turned professional the following year, joined the World Cycling Center Team, and competed at the 2019 World Championships, but her career was interrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic, which forced her to take 2020 off of competitive cycling. She returned in 2021, taking part at that year’s World Championships, but failing to complete the road race. She was killed a few months later, at the age of only 21, after being struck by a driver while training.
