Biography

An amateur footballer throughout his career, Bill Amor was a local policeman who joined Reading FC from biscuit manufacturers Huntley & Palmers in 1947. An outside-left, he made his made his debut for ‘The Royals’ on 14 February 1948 in a game that saw the famous Dagenham Girl Pipers entertain the crowd before the match. He went on to play 68 League and cup games for Reading, scoring two goals. He left Reading in 1951 to join the Metropolitan Police football team. He made his England amateur international debut in the 4-3 defeat by Wales at Shrewsbury in March 1948. The manager of the Great Britain team at the 1948 Olympics was Matt Busby who used Reading’s Elm Park ground for training for the Games.
