Biography

Ted Bennett was the goalkeeper in Great Britain’s only match at the 1952 Olympics, a 5-3 extra time defeat by Luxembourg in the preliminary round. At the end of 90 minutes it was 1-1 but Bennett let in three goals in six minutes at the start of extra time and that put paid to Britain’s chances. Ted Bennett started his career at Southall and Willesden Town before a brief spell at Queens Park Rangers which saw him play two games in the Football League in the 1948-49 season. Bennett won eight England amateur caps during his time at Southall and in 1953 turned professional with Watford and played 81 League games in three seasons. In 1955 he toured Bermuda, Jamaica, Trinidad, and Curaçao with the English FA XI. He ended his career with Gravesend and Northfleet and after his playing days became a greengrocer.
