Hunter Devine could play at inside-forward or winger and was a Scottish amateur international. After playing with local Glasgow amateur side Kirkintilloch St Mary’s he went on to play as an amateur in the Scottish League with Queen’s Park between 1953-61. He scored 48 goals in 99 League games, including a hat-trick at Hampden Park on Easter Monday 1957 against Glasgow Rangers when he had the rare distinction of scoring three goals and ending up on the losing side as Rangers won 6-4. He was a member of the Queen’s Park side that won the very last Scottish B Division title in 1955-56, his only senior honour in the game. He scored in the first minute of his Great Britain début in the 1960 Olympic Games qualifier against the Republic of Ireland at Brighton in 1960 and then played in the first two matches against Brazil and Italy at the Olympics. Having studied as an actuary he got a job with Scottish Amicable and they moved him to London to further his career and Queen’s Park, keen to keep Devine, offered to fly him to Scotland on a Friday and back to London on a Sunday but he wanted to concentrate on his new career and continued to play in the London area for Hounslow Town in the Athenian League before later joining Dulwich Hamlet.
