Biography

Hugh Lindsay trained as a teacher after attending the University of London where he was selected for the football first XI. He played for Wealdstone before a move to Kingstonian in 1960 when he was on the losing side in that year’s FA Amateur Cup final which Hendon won 2-1. He was then selected to represent Great Britain at the 1960 Olympics and played in all three matches. An inside-forward, he won 29 England amateur caps and in 1966, following a return to Wealdstone he was on the winning Amateur Cup winning team when they avenged the 1960 defeat by Hendon with a 3-1 win. Whilst still an amateur he was signed by Southampton in 1960 and they held his registration until 1965 although he only played twice for the first team, despite many efforts of manager Ted Bates to get him to turn professional. But Lindsay remained dedicated to his teaching career and he later became a college lecturer. He was the last amateur to play in the League for Southampton. After leaving Wealdstone in 1970 he joined Hampton for three seasons before returning to Kingstonian as coach. He was selected for two English FA XI Tours; to Malaya, Singapore, Hong Kong, New Zealand and the United States in 1961, and to Gibraltar in 1965. He played in three of Great Britain’s four qualifying matches for the 1964 Olympics but the British team never qualified for the finals in Tokyo.
