An inside-forward who could also play at wing-half, Jack Rawlings served with the East Riding Yeomanry based in Hull during the war and played for the regiment football team and then started his senior football career at Hendon in 1945. He moved to Enfield and then, in 1949, to Hayes where he went on to play 172 games and score 44 goals. Ironically, his last game for Enfield was in a 6-1 win over Hayes in the Charity Cup. And with a further touch of irony, his last match for Hayes, was against Enfield in the 1955 Charity Cup when he scored both goals in a 2-0 win. After a disagreement with Hayes he joined Hendon in 1955 and in his first season helped them win the Athenian League, of which he was the top scorer. He quit in 1958 and became manager of Southall and dovetailed that with his job as a representative with the Castrol Oil Company. He was a very good golfer with a single-figure handicap.
