During the course of his career as an outside-left with Watford, Glossop, Leeds and Derby County, Ivan Sharpe played for England in 12 amateur internationals but never won full international honours. Some later reports note that he was on the team that played at Antwerp in 1920, but he did not play and is not listed with the reserves in 1920 newspapers reports. After his playing days were over he became a distinguished sporting journalist, serving as Editor of the Athletic News and the Kemsley Group. He was also President of the Football Writers’ Associational and in 1951 he wrote his autobiography, 40 Years in Football. In addition, Sharpe was a BBC radio commentator who was behind the microphone for many FA Cup Finals, including the BBC’s first live coverage of a Cup Final in 1936, with Arsenal vs. Sheffield United.
