Biography

Harold Stamper’s entire senior football career was spent at his home-town team Stockton whom he joined in 1909. He stayed with them until his retirement in 1922. Known as “Collie” by the Stockton fans, Stamper was part of the team that beat Eston United in a replay to win the 1912 FA Amateur Cup and a few months later he was also an Olympic gold medalist when he played centre-half in the Olympic semi-final against Finland. It was his only international appearance. When he retired from playing he took up coaching and had spells at the Spanish giants Barcelona and the top Italian club Genoa before his untimely death at the age of 49. His son Basil died five years later serving with the RAF in World War Two.
