South African tennis player Christo van Rensburg specialised in doubles winning a Grand Slam title and reaching the rank of world number five in May 1987. Van Rensburg played professionally from 1983 to 1997 winning 20 ATP doubles titles and almost $2 million in prize money. He also reached the rank of #19 in the world in the singles in February 1988 and competed in the singles at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics.
Van Rensburg won 20 ATP doubles titles from August 1983 to June 1996 with his first victory coming at the Grand Prix Cleveland in the United States with partner Mike Myburg. Van Rensburg had the most success with American Paul Annacone with the duo winning nine titles together. Along with his success in the doubles Van Rensburg also won two ATP singles titles, the first against Jimmy Connors in March 1987, and the second coming against Paul Chamberlin in November 1989.
At the 1985 Australian Open Van Rensburg won the doubles title with Annacone once again partnering him. All of Van Rensburg’s best Grand Slam results came with Annacone with the pair reaching the quarter-finals at the 1985 French Open, and the semi-finals at Wimbledon and the US Open in 1986 and 1989, respectively. Van Rensburg also was a four-time semi-finalist in the mixed doubles, doing so at Wimbledon in 1991 and 1996, and at the US Open again in 1991 and 1996.
