Defender and midfielder Matthias Liebers was on the final East German football (soccer) squad at the 1980 Moskva Olympics that won the silver medal after losing the final against Czechoslovakia 1-0. He came in in the 81st minute of the final. In total, he earned 59 international caps, scoring three goals.
In the GDR Oberliga, Liebers played with 1. FC Lokomotive Leipzig from 1968-91 in 321 matches scoring 37 goals. He helped Leipzig to win the East German cup in 1986 and 1987. In 1987, Leipzig reached the final in the European Cup Winners’ Cup losing the final against Ajax Amsterdam 1-0. After German re-unification he played with VfB Leipzig in the second Bundesliga from 1991-96 and then moved to lower league clubs. After his active career Liebers became a football (soccer) coach.
