Defender Matthias Müller was on the final East German football (soccer) squad at the 1980 Moskva Olympics that won the silver medal after losing the final against Czechoslovakia 1-0. He earned four international caps in total and played nine matches with the GDR Olympic team. Nationally, he played with Dynamo Dresden from 1973-81 in 90 Oberliga matches and 22 European Cup matches. He helped Dresden to win the GDR championships from 1976-78 and the GDR cup in 1976.
On January 24, 1981, Müller was arrested by the GDR State Security Service (Ministerium für Staatssicherheit), with his Dresden teammates Gerd Weber and non-Olympian Peter Kotte, at Berlin-Schönefeld Airport immediately before the GDR national team departed for a South America tour. The three players were accused of attempting an illegal border crossing. While Weber was sentenced to prison, Kotte and Müller got off with probation. Like Kotte, however, Müller was excluded from Dynamo Dresden and banned for life by the GDR Football Association (DFV) for the Oberliga and the second-class GDR league. After German re-unification Müller worked as a football (soccer) coach at lower league clubs.
