Herbert Pankau

As the East German national team won the inter-national qualification matches in 1963 against the West German amateur national team by a 3-0 win in Leipzig and a 2-1 loss in Hannover, the German Olympic team at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics was an East German one. The team won the bronze medal, beating Egypt, 3-1.

Midfielder Herbert Pankau earned 25 international caps and scored four goals with the East German national team. With the Olympic team he played 17 matches and scored one goal.

Pankau played nationally with SC Empor Rostock, later renamed to FC Hansa Rostock. From 1960-71 he appeared in 257 matches in the East German Oberliga and scored 30 goals. After his active career, Herbert Pankau worked as a director of the Seerederei and at the Rostock Bauunion. After the fall of the Berlin Wall, he became managing director of the drospa chain in Mecklenburg, and later was an independent entrepreneur. In 1991 the Rostock sports club elected Pankau as the director of the Stadtsportbund.
