Center forward Dieter Riedel was a member of the East German (GDR) football team that beat Poland 3-1 at the Montréal Olympics to become the first German team to win an Olympic gold medal, although he was not on the team playing the final. From 1973-78 he played four international matches with the East German national team, and also one more with the Olympic team in 1976.
From 1966-80 Riedel played with Dynamo Dresden and helped them to win five national titles (1971, 1973, 1976-78) and also two national cups (1971, 1977). By profession, he became a graduated sports teacher. In addition to his job in a school at Dresden, he coached youth teams of Dynamo Dresden. From 1982-86 he was assistant coach and worked with chief coach Klaus Sammer. From 1995-97 he was also president of his home club.
