Midfielder Rüdiger Schnuphase was on the final East German football (soccer) squad at the 1980 Moskva Olympics that won the silver medal after losing the final against Czechoslovakia 1-0. In total, he earned 45 international caps, scoring six goals and seven more with the GDR Olympic team. In 1974 he was also on the World Cup squad and played two matches in West Germany.
Domestically, Schnuphase played with Rot-Weiß Erfurt (1971-77 and 1984-86) and FC Carl-Zeiß Jena (1977-84). He helped Jena win the GDR Cup in 1980. One year later Jena lost the final at the European Cup Winners’ Cup against Dynamo Tbilisi. Schnuphase played 196 Oberliga matches, scoring 94 goals, and additionally 35 European cup matches scoring eight goals. In 1982, he was elected Football Player of the Year. He later worked as a football (soccer) coach at lower league clubs.
