Forward Wolfgang Seguin (later a midfielder) was in the East German team that won the bronze medal at the 1972 München Olympics, following a 2-2 draw, after extra-time, against the Soviet Union. During the period of extra-time, neither team tried to win, because they knew a draw would secure both of them a medal. Seguin was also in the East German team that surprisingly beat West Germany 1-0 in the 1974 World Cup, although he was not used in the match.
Seguin played 21 international matches between 1972-75. He also played four matches with the GDR Olympic team. Domestically, he played with SC Aufbau Magdeburg, later renamed 1.FC Magdeburg. In 1972, and 1974-75 he helped Magdeburg to win the East German Championship, as well as the East German Cup in 1964-65, 1969, 1973 and 1978-79. His greatest moment came in 1974, when Magdeburg won the European Cup Winners’ Cup against Italy’s AC Milano, and Seguin scored the second goal in a 2-0 victory.
After his playing career Seguin built up a very successful industrial cleaning company in Stendal. He sponsored his home club, and became a member of the executive board. His sons Norman and Paul also became football players, with Paul playing some matches for VfL Wolfsburg in the German Bundesliga.
