Forward Wolfgang Steinbach was on the final East German football (soccer) squad at the 1980 Moskva Olympics that won the silver medal after losing the final against Czechoslovakia 1-0. In total, he earned 28 international caps, scoring one goal and six more with the GDR Olympic team.
Nationally, he played with 1. FC Magdeburg from 1971-87 and again in 1989-90, helping them to win three GDR Championships (1972, 1974, 1975) and four GDR Cups (1973, 1978, 1979, 1983). Steinbach had his greatest moment with Magdeburg when the team won the European Cup Winners’ Cup in 1974, although he was not in the final squad. The team won against AC Milano 2-0.
In total, he won 297 Oberliga matches, scoring 66 goals and all-in-all 433 matches with Magdeburg. After German re-unification he moved to VfB Oldenburg into the second Bundesliga until 1994. He later worked as a football (soccer) coach at lower league clubs.
