Midfielder Pia Wunderlich, sister of Tina Wunderlich, was a member of the German female football squad eliminated in the group stage at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. Four years later at Sydney she was a member of the German team squad but did not play in any match. At the 2004 Athens Olympics Wunderlich won the bronze medal. In 2003, she won the World Cup and was runner-up in 1995. She won the European Championships in 1997, 2001, and 2005. Wunderlich was awarded the Silver Bay Leaf, Germany’s highest sports award. She won 102 international caps and scored 21 goals.
Domestically, Wunderlich played with TSV Battenberg (1991-93), FCR SG Praunheim (1993-98), and 1. FFC Frankfurt (1998-2009). In 1999, 2001-03, and 2007-08 she helped Frankfurt win the German national title and the German Cup in 1999-2003, 2007-08. In 2002, 2006, and 2008 she was also on the Frankfurt Champions League winning team.
Wunderlich turned to coaching with lower level clubs after her playing career. She also became co-ordinator of the girls’ soccer boarding school at the Kaiserau sports school within the Football and Athletics Association of Westfalia.
