Midfielder Rudi Bommer was on the West German football team that lost their quarter-final against Yugoslavia 5-2, and finished fifth at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics. In 1988, the West German team won the third-place match against Italy 3-0 and took the bronze medal. Therefore, the team and all players were awarded the Silver Bay Leaf, Germany’s highest sports award. Bommer won six full international caps and played with the Olympic team 20 times, scoring one goal.
Domestically, Bommer played with Fortuna Düsseldorf (1976-85), Bayer 05 Uerdingen (1985-88), and Eintracht Frankfurt (1992-97), helping Düsseldorf to win the German Cup in 1979 and 1980. In 1979, they lost in the final in the European Cup Winners’ Cup against FC Barcelona. In total, Bommer played 417 Bundesliga matches and scored 54 goals. Between 1988-92 he had a spell in the third league with Viktoria Aschaffenburg.
After his playing career, Bommer became a coach and had several jobs with clubs mainly in the second and third leagues, once leading MSV Duisburg back to the Bundesliga (2007).
