Defensive midfielder Holger Fach was on the West German football team that won the third-place match against Italy 3-0, and took the bronze medal at the 1988 Seoul Olympics. Therefore, the team and all players were awarded the Silver Bay Leaf, Germany’s highest sports award. Fach won five full international caps and played with the Olympic team seven times, scoring one goal.
Domestically, Fach played with Fortuna Düsseldorf (1977-87, 1996-97 and 10 matches in 1998), Bayer 05 Uerdingen (1988-91), VfL Borussia Mönchengladbach (1991-95), FC Bayer 04 Leverkusen (1995-96), and TSV 1860 München (1997-98), helping Mönchengladbach to win the German Cup in 1995. In total, Fach played 416 Bundesliga matches and scored 67 goals. He also played 17 second Bundesliga matches with Düsseldorf.
After his playing career, Fach became a coach and had several jobs with Bundesliga clubs such as Mönchengladbach, Rot-Weiß Essen, VfL Wolfsburg, SC Paderborn and FC Augsburg. In 2010 he had a brief stint with Lokomotive Astrana in Kazakhstan, winning the Kazakh Cup. From 2015-16 he became scout and sporting director with SV Darmstadt 98.
