Defender Wolfgang Funkel, brother of non-Olympian soccer player and coach Friedhelm Funkel, was on the West German football team that won the third-place match against Italy 3-0, and took the bronze medal at the 1988 Seoul Olympics. Therefore, the team and all players were awarded the Silver Bay Leaf, Germany’s highest sports award. Funkel won two full international caps and played with the Olympic team 17 times, scoring two goals.
Domestically, Funkel played with VfR Neuss (1977-82), Viktoria Goch (1982-83), Rot-Weiß Oberhausen (1983-84), Bayer 05 Uerdingen (1984-91), and 1. FC Kaiserslautern (1991-95), helping Uerdingen to win the German Cup in 1985. In total, Funkel played 305 Bundesliga matches and scored 41 goals. He also played several matches in lower leagues.
After his playing career, Funkel became a coach and had several jobs as an assistant coach with Neuss, Oberhausen, FC Hansa Rostock and Kaiserslautern.
